Competitions were an inescapable part of concert pianism. The UNISA one was in Praetoria. Looking back at the videos from the first two rounds is like looking back at a different person. I remember two things in particular. First, that I was hugely relieved to be knocked out, so I could relax and look around South Africa. Second, that a couple of weeks later, in a concert in Budapest, I played better than I had ever played. The months of intense overwork at the keyboard paid off… but it was also a turning point. I was looking for a different sort of life, and moving towards the world of research.

I recovered some film clips from some VHS tapes and shared them on YouTube. Here’s are a few of them.
